How Government Recruitment in India Actually Works
Almost every government vacancy in India follows the same path: a recruiting body publishes an official notification (usually a PDF), applications open on a portal for a fixed window, and shortlisting happens through a written exam, a skill or physical test, and document verification. The notification is the contract — if this page and the official PDF ever disagree, the PDF wins.
Which body advertises a post tells you a lot about the process. Central roles are handled by bodies like the Union Public Service Commission and the Staff Selection Commission, banking posts largely by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection and individual banks, and railway vacancies by the Railway Recruitment Boards. States run their own public service commissions and subordinate selection boards, which is why eligibility, domicile requirements and relaxations differ from one state to the next.
What to Check Before You Apply for Any 2026 Vacancy
Most rejected applications fail on details that were stated plainly in the notification. Before paying a fee or uploading anything, confirm these against the official document:
- Eligibility — the exact qualification and whether a result awaited counts, plus your age on the stated cut-off date rather than today.
- Category relaxation — age and fee concessions differ by category, and certificates such as OBC non-creamy-layer or EWS have validity periods.
- Domicile — many state posts reserve seats for residents or require a local language; central and bank posts usually do not.
- Closing date and time — portals routinely stop accepting applications at a specific hour, not at midnight.
- Document specifications — photo and signature dimensions and file sizes are enforced by the upload form itself.
- Fee mode — the official portal is the only place you should ever pay. A genuine recruiter never charges for selection.
